The exhibition comprises over 25 pencil drawings of forest features on or close to the ground. Many of the drawings are of the torn roots of fallen Giant Sequoia and other trees. Some of these fallen trees are very old, some more recent. Other drawings are the decaying remains of fallen trees and branches laid on the ground. Also included is a series focused on features of the stump of the “Discovery Tree” in the Calaveras Big Trees park.
An Ent is a mythical tree-like being from JRR Tolkien's stories. However, the word is derived from the Anglo-Saxon for giant (enta). This drawing is a detail from the Discovery Tree in Calaveras, Ent seemed a fitting title. To me, this drawing also depicts some of the horror to which this tree and others suffered shortly after their discovery by westerners.
