My art is almost exclusively graphite pencil drawing and is mostly studies of texture. My focus on texture concentrates my work to objects and details and less to scenic composition, but otherwise little restriction on the subject matter.
With the attention to texture I try to produce pleasing images that focus closely on the subject without clutter or distraction and draws the eye to observe the detail. Along with the ability to create the very fine detail, I like the stark contrasts that can be achieved with pencil.
I have always been fascinated by textures, especially in the natural world – decaying wood, dead leaves, rocks, sea shells even peeling paint and broken glass, My fascination with texture and its representation in my drawings has lead me to observe the textures of the world in more detail, finding interesting subjects in unassuming places.
Growing up in the UK, Mark’s drawings were exhibited in a couple of private exhibitions in the late 1960s, but his profession as an engineer overtook his art until 2014 when he picked up his pencils once more.
